Strengthening the Desert Grid: APAR’s HTLS ACCC Conductors Boost Rajasthan’s Power Network

Strengthening the Desert Grid: APAR’s HTLS ACCC Conductors Boost Rajasthan’s Power Network - Case Study #4
APAR recently completed a critical reconductoring project involving High-Temperature Low-Sag (HTLS) Aluminium Conductor Composite Core (ACCC) conductors on six transmission lines operating at 132 kV and 220 kV in Rajasthan. This project, commissioned for Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Prasaran Nigam Limited (RRVPNL), plays a pivotal role in strengthening the power transmission infrastructure in the desert state, which is rapidly expanding its renewable energy capacity.
The reconductoring project focused on upgrading six lines in key regions including Jodhpur, Bikaner, and Jaisalmer. These lines are crucial for managing increased loads and ensuring system reliability as several large-scale solar plants have been established in these areas. The project addressed challenges such as road and railway crossings, desert terrain of the Thar, voltage drops, and severe right-of-way constraints.
Rajasthans Renewable Energy Ambition
- Target: 125 GW renewable energy capacity by 2030 (90 GW solar, 25 GW wind).
- Requires: A reliable, high-capacity transmission network for power evacuation.
- Supports integration of multiple large-scale solar plants in the desert region.
Technical Highlights: APAR HTLS ACCC Conductors
APAR’s ACCC conductors used in this project feature fully annealed trapezoidal-shaped aluminium wires stranded concentrically over a hybrid carbon and glass fibre composite core. These conductors are classified as HTLS conductors and offer several advantages over conventional Aluminium Conductor Steel Reinforced (ACSR) conductors:
- Higher Temperature Operation with Low Sag: Enables increased current carrying capacity without excessive sagging.
- Superior Electrical and Mechanical Performance: Lower electrical losses and lighter weight enhance efficiency.
- Excellent Corrosion Resistance: The composite core resists corrosion, extending conductor life.
- Enhanced Load Management: Accommodates higher loads and improves grid stability.
Impact and Future Benefits
- Strengthens Rajasthan’s grid reliability and load management.
- Enables efficient evacuation of renewable power from solar and wind farms.
- Supports Rajasthan’s clean energy goals and India’s net-zero ambitions.
- Addresses technical challenges posed by desert terrain and increasing load demands.
- Demonstrates APAR’s commitment to innovative, sustainable conductor solutions.
APAR’s Leading Achievements
