Leading the Charge in Cardiac Care: APAR & Dharmsinh Desai Memorial Methodist Heart Institute’s (DDMM) Collaborative Journey

This World Heart Day, APAR proudly renews its commitment to advancing life-saving cardiac care through its impactful partnership with the Dharmsinh Desai Memorial Methodist Heart Institute (DDMM) in Nadiad, Gujarat. Since 1993, DDMM has emerged as a beacon of excellence in accessible, cutting-edge cardiac treatment, embodying the spirit of sustainable healthcare and community well-being. Together, APAR and DDMM champion transformative health outcomes, fostering equitable access to critical heart care while driving positive social impact and shared value for the communities we serve.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of mortality in India, accounting for approximately 28% of all deaths annually. According to the World Health Organisation, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are responsible for 63% of total deaths in India, with CVDs comprising 27% of these. India experiences over 7 million deaths attributable to heart disease each year. Furthermore, access to advanced cardiac care remains constrained in numerous regions, leading to under-diagnosis and delayed treatment.

A Legacy of Excellence in Cardiac Care

Registered in 1993 and operational from 1995, DDMM began as a modest outpatient facility. Within a year, it expanded rapidly, introducing cardiac catheterisations by March 1996, open-heart surgeries in July 1996, and interventional cardiology procedures by November 1996. This swift progression reflects DDMM’s clear objective: to deliver world-class treatment for cardiac and vascular diseases through cutting-edge infrastructure and technology.

Advanced Infrastructure and Comprehensive Services

DDMM’s infrastructure supports precise and efficient cardiac interventions:

  • Non-Invasive Cardiac Diagnostics: Western India’s first ‘AI- enabled ACUSON ORIGIN’ Echo machine from Siemens, enhancing cardiac imaging accuracy.
  • ICUs:Equipped with multi-channel monitors, ventilators, and devices such as intra-aortic balloon pumps, the ICUs operate 24/7 to manage complex cardiac emergencies including myocardial infarction and heart failure.
  • Operation Theatres:Modular and ultra-modern, supported by onsite blood banks, pathology labs, physiotherapy, and dietary units to ensure seamless patient care.
  • Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory:Features the AXIOM Artis digital flat-panel imaging system facilitating a range of procedures like angioplasty, stenting, electrophysiology studies, valvuloplasty, and pacemaker implantation.
  • Blood Bank:Serving the Kheda district with component therapy, optimising blood utilisation to benefit multiple patients and backed by a robust voluntary donor network.

Community Engagement and Education

Addressing the rising burden of coronary heart disease (CHD) in India requires proactive outreach. DDMM conducts regular awareness programs, seminars, and workshops aimed at educating communities on prevention, early detection, and management of heart disease. The institute fosters continuous learning through weekly academic sessions for healthcare practitioners and collaborations with medical associations.

Leadership and Recognition

The vision behind DDMM originates from Shri Dharmsinh Desai, a respected leader, philanthropist, and parliamentarian, commemorated through this institute that integrates advanced cardiology services and research. The establishment comprises the DDMM Institute of Cardiology, CJ Patel Institute of Cardiac Research, and Dr. N.D. Desai Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory.

The institute holds NABH accreditation, reflecting its excellence in clinical quality and patient safety standards.
